Detailed description of Range End Country Club

Range End Country Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. The course is centrally positioned within thirty minutes of Harrisburg, York, Carlisle and Gettysburg.

Range End Country Club first opened for play in 1955. The course was designed by Roy Smith.

A brook and three small ponds come into play on nine holes making this mature, relatively open course, challenging. Add fifty bunkers and it doesn't take long to recognize that those who hit well placed shots will reap greater rewards than those of the grip it and rip it school of golf.

This gem of a layout had been a well-kept secret for forty years. That's because from 1955 to 1995 it was operated as a private country club. Local businessmen acquired the property, opening it to the public, and began making massive improvements.

The one thing that did not need improvemeny was the natural beauty. The brooks, ponds, mature foliage and mountainous backdrops that offer awe-inspiring scenic vistas work together to enhance the round immensely. Range End features small manicured greens with open approach shots. With several choices of tees, Range End offers challenges for all skill levels.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6181 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5203 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 1, a par-5 that plays to 508 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 15, a par-3 that plays to 165 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 2, a 423 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Range End Country Club is # 15, the 165 yard par-3.

Played here on an unseasonably warm November day, with temps in the 70's after noon. I mention this because the course conditions varied considerably as the dew burnt off. Greens were sluggish early in the round, but picked up quite a bit as they dried out. Same with fairways: got no roll to speak of early on. Signs of drainage issues on some fairways on the front, too. Layout is pretty basic, with mostly straight holes, and only a few doglegs. Course has 5 par 3's, and all exceed 150 yards from the White tees, Lots of bunkers, and some modest elevation change. Some very nice vistas, though, especially on the back nine, which has a few hills. Conditions today were good for this time of year, with the only negative being the bunkers, which were very firm. We paid $19 with the Tee Time book, which is a good price for this course. Staff we met were very welcoming, and made clear that they appreciated our patronage. Course is walkable, if ou are so inclined. Clubhouse is a little dated, but has the essentials. Overall, it's not a "destination" type of course, but has a nice, friendly, "neighborhood" feel, and is worth a visit. We recommend.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Dampness is a problem on the front nine. But overall the condition is good this year.

Range End is usually one of my favorites because it is in good shape, has some challenge to it, but is not overly difficult, and is a good value. However, I will not play it again this year due to the greens. The tee boxes, fairways, rough are in great shape, but the greens and sandboxes are terrible. Greens mean a lot to me, so I was very disappointed to find the greens in bad shape. I played it early in the season and they were in good shape, but they are terrible right now.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
